BMC Issues Demolition Order Against Gold Gym Outlet in Powai’s Supreme Business Park

THE Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a demolition order against a branch of the well-known fitness chain Gold Gym, located at Stilt Level 4, Supreme Business Park, Powai, for unauthorized construction under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act, 1966.

A notice dated 05/05/2025 was issued under Section 53(1) read with Section 52(1)(b)(d) of the MRTP Act, citing unauthorized internal partitions, restrooms, and commercial conversion—executed without permission and in violation of the sanctioned plan (CE/1046/BPES/AS dated 28/01/2011).

Subsequently, a Speaking Order dated 21/07/2025 was passed under Section 53(6)(a)(b) declaring the structure unauthorized and directing its demolition within 15 days. Today marks the final day of that compliance period.

The structure has been developed by builder Vikrant Sharma, who is also facing serious allegations of multiple unauthorized commercial activities within the same building. A complaint is currently pending before the S Ward Office regarding:

1-A restaurant operating in the refugee area of the building. 2-A gymnastics coaching center, also set up inside the refugee area and 3-A banquet hall constructed on the terrace, allegedly without required permissions.

Speaking on the issue, Dr. Vedprakash Tiwari, Advocate, Bombay High Court, stated- The misuse of refugee areas meant for emergency safety is not only illegal but dangerous. Immediate and equal enforcement of the law is necessary, regardless of brand or builder.

Gold Gym, which has a strong presence across Mumbai, has been directed to comply with the demolition order at its own risk, cost, and consequences. Further action, including prosecution under the MRTP Act, may follow if the directive is not implemented.
